Scuba diving in Greece

For the protection of the underwater antiquities, the scuba diving was almost forbidden in the Greek seas except from a few areas specially reserved for scuba diving. While the snorkeling - the free diving and the spear fishing was allowed almost everywhere.

Since 2006 this has totally changed. Now the scuba diving is permitted everywhere in the Greek seas except from specific areas reserved for antiquities protection and in areas that it is dangerous for divers (like ports or where there is a lot of marine traffic).

Since 2007, all the Greek dive centers have to comply with the European Standard EN 14467 which is related to recreational diving services, ensuring this way high standards in divers safety when scuba diving in Greece

With the exception of the night dives, it is not necessary that the scuba divers must use a diving centre for their scuba diving. They can dive independently from a diving centre, provided that they dive with a buddy and that they are both certified at a minimum level of  Open Water Diver. With these prerequisites, the scuba divers can rent the diving equipment that they need from a diving centre and go diving independently.

This makes extremely cheap the scuba diving in Greece since the cost of renting a full scuba diving set is at about 25 Euros per day while the rental of a full tank is at about 8 Euros per day and refilling a tank will cost at about 5 Euros.
