Sponge Industry

The sponge fishery would not have been developed without the sponge process industry and commerce.
Kalymnos has a unique Know How on natural sponge process and Kalymnian traders control over 70% of natural sponge commerce worldwide.

Natural sponges are surrounded by a black membrane. They continuously filter the water around them. From this procedure they withhold various micro organism, sea plants and stones.
The first process is done by the sponge divers on their boats. They remove the membrane, the micro organism and as much stone as possible. This way the natural sponges get a brown colour.
The wholesalers process even more the natural sponges. With a special process done in many stages by people with great experience and knowledge, they give the golden colour and velvet texture we all know.

Spited all over the island, you can find natural sponges wholesaler's warehouses with owners willing to explain the process procedure, the natural sponge kinds ant their use.
